REVEALED: The reason why Kate dresses like Princess Diana

The Duchess of Cambridge has channelled as many as 19 times since joining the Royal Family upon marrying Prince William in 2011, according to eagle-eyed fans. Notably, to present Prince George and Prince Louis to the world, Kate wore two Jenny Packham dresses strikingly similar to the ones chosen by Diana when she stepped down the stairs of the London’s Lindo Wing after Prince William and Prince Harry’s births. Both royals picked a large polka dots dress after the birth of their first sons and a red one with a white collar for their youngest.

Similarities in their outfits can also be found in other key moments of Diana and Kate’s lives.

The duchess wore a lovely pale blue dress with a matching headscarf in Kuala Lumpur, almost identical to the one donned by Princess Diana during her visit to Pakistan in 1996.

The latest reminder of Diana that sent royal fans into frenzy was spotted on the family portrait released in occasion of Prince Charles’s 70th birthday.

Then, wore a navy blue polka-dot dress with a white collar, similar to a navy blue polka-dot dress Diana was depicted in 1985.

And it has now been claimed Kate chooses these clothes pays her “respects” to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, by choosing outfits that are a clear reminder of the iconic style of the People’s Princess.

The reason behind Kate’s choice of clothing divides royal fans, according to Susan Kelley of the popular site What Kate Wore.

Ms Kelley said: “The duchess has a degree in art history.

“She pays attention to details and design.

“Using that background and looking to Diana for fashion inspiration makes perfect sense.

“For me, the linkage is that of an homage, a sign of respect or acknowledgement.”

Princess Diana is universally recognised as one of the best-dressed women in history, which draws her closer to fashion icons such as Elizabeth Taylor or Audrey Hepburn.

Eleri Lynn, curator of a 2017 exhibition at Kensington Palace called “Diana: Her Fashion Story”, said: “She is stepping into that same sort of space as an Audrey Hepburn or Jackie Kennedy, a fashion icon whose style is so emulated and so loved, really.”

According to Ms Lynn, Diana’s wardrobe mirrored her personality.

She added: “Cheerful, colourful clothes because she wanted to convey approachability and warmth.

“She didn’t wear gloves because she liked to hold people’s hands.

“She would sometimes wear chunky jewellery so that children could play with it, and she never wore hats to children’s hospitals after a while, because she said you couldn’t cuddle a child in a hat.”
