Tom Ford Spring Summer 2012

So it's always interesting when a designer decides to play a non traditional game with the media and block all photographers and non-special people from their runway show. But this is the second year Tom Ford has done this, and maybe it's not the best way to go judging by the meh reactions to this collection.
Surely not! I cried! You cannot dismiss Tom Ford! The world will go into free fall and there will anarchy on the streets - that was until I saw the collection and lets just say the reports and rumors of the great mans downfall could well be justified...
Tom Ford to me always has this slick sexiness. It's about American big glamour and it makes me think of shoulder pads and silks placed next to velvet and big hair. I think 70s glamour and Gucci, which isn't shocking considering who were are discussing! But this was an awkward collection with few hits sliced in amongst some truly horrific designs. I skipped through most of the pieces willing it to get better but it really didn't.
None of it was groundbreaking stuff and nothing we haven't seen on the high street several times over. I like that skirt but I know I could walk out and find it in Topshop inbetween the sequinned hotpants and oversized hipster sweaters. Lets get real here for a minute! I know that Ford likes to tease and make us wait for the images but the reports from insiders at the show this year were damning. We all heard about the awkwardness of the standing ovation that never came right? (apparently he stood there to the sound of awkward silence while no one clapped - I'm really liking the word awkward in this post aren't I?)
It just seems as if there are several collections and the work of very differnet designers going on here. I am not sure what key trends I can pick out. I do like the fringed leather jacket and the skirt but I really hate the below pieces....
WHAT WAS HE THINKING?????? Erm, hello 2003? I thought the rule was 20 years in fashion before it's 'ironic' enough?!?!?!?
There were quite a few pieces from the collection with puffy off the shoulder sleeves. The review is up to be read on Vogue.com and skimming over it I feel as if I can't tell what they actually thought. The piece is full of quotations from Ford about his inspirations and thoughts on the collection and his brand but there is very little opinion about the line. I don't know how they feel about it. God knows. Style.com have yet to post theirs.
 I do love this outfit.
It's been a harsh season for fashion, SS12, with a few designers drawing negative reviews in Paris and London - the collections of Viktor and Rolf, Racheal Zoe and Valentino spring to mind as being at the forefront of a fashion verbal lashing! To be fair though, Viktor and Rolf was possibly the worst collection I have ever had to review. It was god awful.

So all in all, what did I think? I am not overly impressed with this. I think if you are going to make a big impression with your work by blocking most people from your shows including the media, then you better make it count. This seemed lazy, boring and a little high street. If I had labelled this Zara or Topshop, no one would have fought me on it. There is no doubting the genius of Ford and the craftsmanship which make him such a wonderful designer but this collection just doesn't sit right together and creates an overall awkward display.
